Rapidly Aging Cells May Contribute to Shorter Lifespan of Fabry Patients, Study Finds
This study investigated the role of accelerated cellular aging in Fabry disease, a rare genetic disorder. Researchers measured telomere length, a biomarker of biological age, in patients with Fabry disease and found shorter telomeres compared to healthy individuals. This suggests that cells in Fabry patients age faster.
While telomerase activity (an enzyme that repairs telomeres) was higher in patients, potentially compensating for this shortening, it was insufficient in men, who have a significantly shorter lifespan than women with the disease.
The study also found a link between lower telomerase activity and more severe kidney disease, suggesting that cellular aging may contribute to disease progression.
These findings highlight the potential importance of telomere markers in assessing disease risk and progression in Fabry disease.

Breakthrough Gene Therapy Clinical Trial is World's First Aiming to Reverse 20 Years of Aging
A first-in-human clinical trial for a gene therapy that aims to reverse aging by 20 years. Libella Gene Therapeutics, the company conducting the trial, believes that aging is a disease caused by shortening telomeres, the protective caps on our chromosomes. Telomeres shorten with each cell division, and scientists believe this is linked to aging.
Libella's gene therapy delivers an enzyme called telomerase, which can lengthen telomeres. The trial is being conducted in Colombia because traditional clinical trials in the US can be expensive and time-consuming. Participants will pay $1 million to enroll in the trial.
